Sarasota's Best Kept Secret is Exposed Next Weekend

Sarasota, a gulf town with a county population of only 350,000 residents, is an enclave of cultural riches. Already home to a ballet company, an orchestra, an opera company, a film festival and several fine professional theaters will launch its most forward-looking art event yet.
Next week, from October 7-11, 2009, Sarasota inaugurates the Ringling International Arts Festival. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art has collaborated with New York's Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) to present an array of cutting-edge disciplines and performances. Also expected to appear is none other than the legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Included in the eclectic line up is the avant-garde theater company Elevator Repair Service which is presenting its adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. As a former dancer and current cat lover, one artist's name alone has grabbed my attention--Meow Meow--a deconstruction cabaret artist. Also slated are dance pieces by Israeli choreographer Deganit Shemy. And from Spain's Compania Maria Pages in Flamenco y Poesia.
